Kia ora Councillors,

After CubaDupa, I started to wonder why we only get access to Cuba Street once a year.

Every single year, CubaDupa transforms the streets with cheap bollards and festival fun. People call for Cuba Street to be a pedestrian space. It’s broadly popular. And nothing happens.

I’m sick of it. It would be incredibly easy to make Cuba Street accessible only to delivery and emergency vehicles. And we should.

I know businesses feel nervous about disruption. That’s why we should do a two-year trial with quick, low-cost materials — concrete blocks, astroturf, paint. It could be done in a day. Test it for two years. If Wellington falls in love, make it permanent.

A car-free Cuba is exactly the kind of affordable street transformation that should be prioritised in an oil crisis.

Will you support a trial to pedestrianise Cuba Street?

Ngā mihi,
